  • Royal Crown Revue are a Los Angeles-based seven-piece band who breathe new life into the zoot-suited beboppin' jumpin' jive music of the prerock era. Following in the noble footsteps of two guys named Louis Jordan and Prima, that is the Revue serve up a crazy, freewheeling set of swingin' sounds on Mugzy's Move.

  • "Pull your Hudson Terraplane out of the garage, slap on a zoot suit, polish your wingtips and jitterbug your way down to the Derby. Down a few Cuba Libres and you don't have to worry about whether to enlist or to join the Civil Conservation Corps, or what your girlfriend's dad thinks of you. The Royal Crown Revue hits the stage and the tiny dance floor is packed with young Ruby Keelers and Donald O'Connors swinging away their blues." (L.A. Weekly)

  • Most of the group's material is original, though the album includes wild versions of the likes of "Beyond The Sea" and Willie Dixon's "I Love The Life I Live," in addition to such Royal Crown classics as "Zip Gun Bop" and "Hey Pachuco!"

  • The album was recorded with esteemed producer Ted Templeman (everyone from Van Morrison to Van Halen).

    Hey Pachuco!
    (WAV , AIFF)

    (James Achor/Mando Dorame/Eddie Nichols)
    Horns Arranged by Bill Ungerman

Summer '43 the man's gunnin' for me
Blue and white mean war tonight
They say damn my pride and all
The other cats livin' down the east side
Tonight there's no place to hide

Hey Marie you better grab my jack
    And zip gun for me
    'Cause I'll face no shame
Tonight's the night I die for our name

    Well when we hit downtown
    We start to throw down
    We end up doing time
    Soon as they've met us
    They're out to get us
So I stick with that gang of mine

    Zip Gun Bop
    (WAV , AIFF)

    (Mando Dorame/Eddie Nichols)
Arranged by Mando Dorame and Eddie Nichols

Well there's this dance, you ought to know
It's a little somethin' I made up cats
    To keep your heads low
See there are lots of sore gangsters
    Packin' iron all day
So you learn my two steps stay out of their way

    Zip gun, zip gun bop
Ya better learn to do it 'fore yer poor heart stops now
    Zip gun, zip gun bop

    Well there's flat-foot Louie
    Sittin' on his front stoop
He caught five rounds in the belly
He looked like a messed-up bowl of minestrone soup

Now you take that cat Mugs
He got iced the other day
He could have saved his mama
The dry cleanin' bill my way

    Zip gun, zip gun bop
Ya better learn to do it 'fore yer poor heart stops
    Zip gun, zip gun bop

    So now you can see
Zip gun bop was meant to be
    Lots of lead flyin'
    Lots of lonely gals cryin'
But you can hear them cats shootin'
    They're shootin' rat-ta-tat-tat
So you learn my two step Jack
    Or that's that

    Zip gun, zip gun bop
Ya better learn to do it 'fore yer poor heart stops
    Zip gun, zip gun bop
    Hey hey

    Zip gun, zip gun bop
Ya better learn to do it 'fore yer poor heart stops
Oh yeah baby, that zip gun bop

    Mugzy's Move
    (WAV , AIFF)

    (Mando Dorame/Eddie Nichols)
Arranged by Eddie Nichols and Mando Dorame

Mugzy's in the mood for losing cat
He's gonna beat it downtown to where it's at
Hocks his axe for some cash and a mess of blues
    When sickness drowns his fear
    The line becomes unclear
Well, just one more black day

    How great is his need
    A flowering bad seed
Well he's dying from his thirst cut off from all ties
    Then he'll realize

    He's gonna drown
In that hat full of rain
With a heart full of pain

And how can you live with a hat full of rain?
And a soul full of pain

    How great is his need
    A flowering bad seed
Well he's dying from his thirst
    Cut off from all ties
    Then he'll realize
    He's gonna drown
In that hat full of rain
With a heart full of pain
And how can you live with a hat full of rain?
And a soul full of pain

I Love The Life I Live
    (WAV , AIFF)

(Willie Dixon; Additional lyrics by Eddie Nichols)

I see you watching me just like a hawk
I don't mind the way you talk
    But if you touch me
    Something's gotta give
I live the life I love
And I love the life I live

My diamond ring and my money too
Tomorrow night they could belong to you
The girls move me at their will
I live the life I love
And I love the life I live

I may lay a hundred on a bet this time
Tomorrow night can't cover your dime
If I'm flat my kitten digs me still
I'm just tryin' tell you daddy
    How I feel

You see me walkin' as I pass you by
Don't talk about me 'cause I could be high
    Just forgive me
    If you will
I live the life I love
And I love the life I live
    Yeah

My private life you just may not dig
But your aspersions will not flip my wig
Opinions hold water like a sieve
I live the life I love
And I love the life I live

I may lay a hundred on a bet this time
Tomorrow night can't cover your dime
If I'm flat my kitten digs me still
I'm just tryin' to tell you daddy
    How I feel

You see me walkin' as I pass you by
Don't talk about me 'cause I could be high
    Just forgive me
    If you will

I live the life I love
And I love the life I live

I live the life I love
And I love the life I live

    I live my life

Just let the door knob hit you
Where the dog shoulda bit you

    The Walkin' Blues

(Ralph Bass/Jesse Powell/Frances Dailey; Additional lyrics by Eddie Nichols)
    Horns Arranged by Bill Ungerman

Walk right in, walk right out
Walk right in, walk right out
Well my baby keeps on walkin'
    Well I met this gal
She wanted to ride in my truck
    Well she had no wheels
Wanted to ride in my truck
Man she jumped in the cab
All she wants to do is

Walk right in, she walks right out
She walks right in, walks right out
She walks right in, walks right out

    Well I met this chick
She wanted to steal my bucks
    She thought I was loaded
    Man she needed them bucks
But one peek in my wallet
All she wants to do is

Walk right in, she walks right out
She walks right in, walks right out
She walks right in, walks right out

    Well I met this gal
    She loves to hucklebuck
Well, she's a real fine dancer
    Loves to hucklebuck
Man we get on the floor
All she wants to do is

Walk right in, she walks right out
She walks right in, walks right out
She walks right in, walks right out
    Yeah baby!

Well, if you're diggin' this number
    Baby you're out of luck
And if you're likin' that guitar playing
    You're out of luck
    But since you like it
    You must love to

Walk right in, walk right out
You walk right in, walk right out
You walk right in, walk right out
That's what this song is all about

    Beyond The Sea

    (Charles Trenet/Jack Lawrence)
String and Horns Arranged and Conducted by Artie Butler

    Somewhere beyond the sea
    Somewhere waitin' for me
My lover stands on golden sands
And she watches the ships that go
    Sailin' sailin'

    Somewhere beyond the sea
    Somewhere watchin' for me
If I could fly like birds on high
    Then straight to your arms
    I go sailin'

    And somewhere beyond the sea
Well she's there watchin' for me
If I could fly like birds on high
    Then straight to your arms
    I go sailin' sailin'

Well it's far beyond the stars
And it's clear beyond the moon

And I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon
    And we'll meet I know we'll meet
Beyond the shore and we'll kiss just as before

Happy we'll be beyond the sea
    And never again I'll go
    Sailin' sailin'

And I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon
    And we'll meet I know we'll meet
Beyond the shore and we'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be beyond the sea
    And never again I'll go
    Sailin'

    Park's Place

    (Mando Dorame/Eddie Nichols)
    Arranged by Mando Dorame

    There's a place I know
The wise guys go that's Park's Place
Showgirls swing when the chairman sings
    At Park's Place-Park's Place
    Yes my friends
    It's the livin' end
    Park's Place
    The lights, fights and skirts
Are a sight at Park's Place
Mugs and thugs and big old lugs
    Dig Park's Place
Man they really ball at Park's Place

    They're high, they're low
    They blow their dough
    At Park's Place
Man the time flies at Park's Place
Yes my friend it's livin' in Park's Place

    Datin' With No Dough

    (Eddie Nichols/Bill Ungerman)
    Arranged by Bill Ungerman

I'm fly and flash and my jive is sweet
Pressed in pleat right to my feet
But when it comes to cash
    I'm incomplete
    Datin' with no dough

I told my doll I'd take her on a date
On the condition that she'd have to wait
'Cause I've never owned a car in the state
I'll be datin' with no dough

The valets and the maitre d'
Roll out the red carpet for me
    My looks are deceiving Lord
'Cause when the check comes I'll be gone

Guess I'm deadbeat but what a seller
If flash were cash I'd be a Rockefeller
As long as my game goes unknown
I'll be datin' with no dough

    I took my baby uptown
To show her that I had some class
The drink tab I could not pay
You know I ended the date with her foot up my
Yes I'm a deadbeat but what a seller
If flash were cash I'd be a Rockefeller
As long as my game goes unknown
I'll be datin' with no dough

    Trouble In Tinsel Town

    (James Achor/Eddie Nichols/Bill Ungerman)
    Arranged by Bill Ungerman

Dirty neon lights, the traffic's cry
    Footsteps echo on the street
    The cheap but lovely chicks
And a sawbuck for a trick
And she'll work for a bite to eat
So where is all the glamour?
    Where's that lovely starlet's kiss?
    But out in T.V. land
    They dream of Tinsel Town
But I'll tell you just what they've missed

    Hustlers roll, beat cops stroll
The city where the night runs deep
Seedy bars, cats in lowered cars
    That's Hollywood while you're asleep

    Well here comes the fog
    Or is that smog?
'Cause man I can't tell anymore
There ain't no welcome wagon around this town
Fred and Ethel sure the hell ain't next door
But way out in the distance
Someone watches the late night show
They dream of being hip on Sunset Strip
But I'll tell you what they don't know

Dirty neon lights, the traffic's cry
    Footsteps echo on the street
    The cheap but lovely chicks
And a sawbuck for a trick
And she'll work for a bite to eat
So where is all the glamour?
    Where's that lovely starlet's kiss?
    But out in T.V. land
    They dream of Tinsel Town
But I'll tell you just what they've missed

    Hustlers roll, beat cops stroll
The city where the night runs deep
Yeah seedy bars, cats in lowered cars

The Rise And Fall Of The Great Mondello

    (Eddie Nichols/Scott Steen/Bill Ungerman)
Arranged by Bill Ungerman and Scott Steen

    Ladies and gents
    Your attention please
Let's look to the flying trapeze
The great Mondello will take to the sky
    Watch him go-see him fly!

Now this wonder will start with some flips
While the ladies are bitin' their lips
    Now the tension is high
As it gets, ŃThat's right folks no netsę

This cat was flying through with
    The greatest of ease
All of a sudden he missed the trapeze
Down and down, down and down
    Kersplatty on the ground

Come and see where Mondello did land
The poor fellow is in the Lord's hands
Oh me oh my what a shame
    Nothing left
    Just a stain

Ladies and gents your attention please
The service will be held at three
Invite the trainers, the clowns and the geeks
That's all folks go home see you next week

    Honey Child

    (Deadric Malone)

Sometimes your love is just like honey
So sweet and wild-so sweet and wild
Sometimes your love is just like menthol
So cool and nice-so cool and nice
That's why I don't want no other lover
    Nobody but you

    Honey child, honey child

You got a funny little way
    A way of teasing
Feels so right, yeah so right
    You've got a way-such a way
Through the night, all through the night
That's why I don't want no other lovin'
    Nobody but you

    Honey child

You got a brand of lovin'
That sets my soul on fire
You got a brand of kissin'
    That drives me wild
That's why I don't want no other lover

That's why I don't want no other lover
That's why I don't want no other lover
Say, that's why I don't want no other lover
Say, that's why I don't want no other lover, baby
